Falling into Depression

Falling into depression is the current series of fine art portraits that I am working on. The series is inspired the mental illness of Depression and how some individuals diagnosed with it describe the feeling of losing themselves and their interests.

"But then just as everything started getting back to normal I felt as if I was falling into a dark bottomless pit from which I would never escape." (Dr. Sue Black)

As Dr. Black describes in her article "Falling into Depression: What Depression Feels Like to Me," Depression can often feel like falling into nothingness. This feeling is what I aimed to capture through my photographs.

For this project, I photographed model Maria Tapia in a studio setup, using both digital and 4"x5" film.
